“It has been almost a year in the making,” says Jack Rushton, the Short Play Festival’s founder, organizer, producer, and proteus. “The call for submissions for went out on January 1, 2020, and the idea was to present our third festival in the same way as our first two festivals – as six sold-out, live productions in our black box theater over two weekends in October.” As we all know now, that this was not to be.
So, Jack and the plays’ actors, directors, producers, and technicians pivoted. The plays were filmed and/or Zoom-recorded and will be shown in two acts in December and January. “Part of TASN’s mission is to support and foster new work,” he explains, “and this is what we do – no matter what it takes. TASN has been home base for many local artists over the years.” He notes that this year’s collective efforts are, in part, a way to give back to the Studio itself.
Act 1 plays include The Next Ivan Sharansky, by Jim Geoghan, an insightful and hilarious look inside Hollywood. InI Wish…, by Judith Strang-Waldau, you’ll find out what two people and cat have in common with Tofu. When I fall in love, it will be…, by Susan Middaugh, is a poignant story of love and kinship. Family Secrets, by Emily McClain, takes you to the spirit world where sisters are reunited – sort of. In Meet Millie, by Amana Sage Comerford, a new real estate agent must deal with her parents before she can deal with her first client.
