Comments:
Hello, I’m Wendell Peterson, your local Electrician. Every once and a while I like to share some insights that I hope are helpful. Look for more details in upcoming blogs! Please feel free to ask me questions using Answers or for a community discussion, join me in Discussions. Of course I am always available to assist.
Electrical Service Upgrades
it’s interesting how many people are surprised to learn that an electrical service upgrade from say a 100 amp to 200 amp service does not change the ability of the existing circuits to handle more load. There is more work required to change the existing circuits to stop tripping breakers. The best picture I can give people is it’s like installing a larger fuel tank for the oil burner, but it won’t give more heat unless a new zone is added or more baseboards are added.
Generators
Do you have a dwelling with two electrical meters and you want to power both power panels off of one generator? You’ll need a dual transfer panel that will transfer the generator power to both panels and switch back automatically.
Lighting
Wafer recessed LED lights have been improving and are very desirable for lighting in all rooms of the house or business. They are designed to fit in the depth of ½” Sheetrock and not interfere with any of the existing framing or plumbing etc existing in the space above the ceiling. With the narrow
design, the Wafer LED can be installed in
confined, hard to reach spaces such as closets, bathrooms, hallways,
stairwells and outside soffits. These and other areas with shallow
plenum often make it impossible to install traditional recessed
housings. They come in a variety of sizes from 2-6”, and some can select the Kelvin color of the light it produces from 2700 to 4000.
Surge Suppression
In today’s electronic world, your home’s electrical, phone and cable
systems are incomplete unless they incorporate surge protection. Since
most everything in the home is microelectronic based, it is not
practical to solely rely on surge protected plug strips. By installing a surge protective device (SPD) in the
load center of your home, surge protection is provided for all branch
circuits. Surge suppression devices are improving all the time and can be added to existing panels.
Home Wireless Devices
Here is a device that I have a great interest in! You’re snuggled on the couch or bed but the light switch is across room or the house is dark as you arrive home. Forget the clapper! With a click of a button you can turn on/off or dim your lights using the Cassetta wireless switch by Lutron. It is part of a family of home wireless devices and allows the user to install one single pole switch like normal, but add a Pico wireless transmitter and control the light literally from anywhere.
